our History
Scott Premium Closures inherits the legacy and history of the Scott Laboratories closure business.
That history with closures began in 1964, when Robert Scott traveled to Europe in search of dependable suppliers for the growing U.S. wine industry—an uncommon effort at the time. His first partnership was with ICAS, a wirehood manufacturer in Ivrea, Italy, marking Scott Labs’ earliest and longest-running vendor relationship.
That collaboration helped establish ICAS in the North American market, eventually making Scott Labs its exclusive representative and supporting ICAS as it grew into the world’s leading wirehood producer.
ICAS was only the beginning. Over the following decades, Scott Labs continued to build relationships with additional European closure suppliers, helping introduce their craftsmanship to American producers. Many of those partners still work with us today, forming the foundation of the diverse portfolio curated by Scott Premium Closures.

Scott Premium Closures now carries forward the natural cork program established by Scott Laboratories, an operation shaped by decades of innovation and leadership in cork quality.
Scott Laboratories played a defining role in raising natural cork standards in North America. They were the first to introduce SO₂ into cork packaging, a preventative step that significantly reduced mold risk during transport and storage. They also pioneered the use of Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) for TCA screening, bringing a level of sensitivity and consistency that helped curb large‑scale TCA incidents and ultimately became the industry standard. As founding members of the Cork Quality Council (now the Natural Cork Council), Scott Labs helped establish shared quality benchmarks and collaborative efforts to reduce TCA at its source, ensuring higher‑quality cork offerings for the U.S. market.

Since the 1990s, the Scott Laboratories natural cork program has been shaped by a long-standing partnership with Mario Pinto Gato of Corval, a respected négociant in Portugal. Mario works directly with top producers, conducting on‑site quality evaluations and selecting only the lots that meet the strict requirements of our program. When cork arrives in North America, we perform independent QC again, creating a two‑tiered system that ensures consistency and integrity.
This structure, supported by decades of innovation and supplier relationships, makes us the only fully independent natural cork supplier in North America, and one of the few offering a truly boutique program defined by rigorous selection and deep industry expertise.
